Welcome to this page. Here you can learn some of the basics about Manga and Anime, and some misconceptions we can clear up.
In a nut shell, Manga is a graphic novel which originates from Japan, it has a long history dating back to WW2 (and a little bit before that), they read from right to left and genres cover comedy to romance to sci-fi. Anime is its animation equivalent, also from Japan.
To the left is an example from our project, which reads in the traditional way.
The most common thing I hear from students is that teachers (some times parents) say 'it's not a real book!'. Yes it is, you open it, read it, it has characters and long, winding plots - it's a book! Just because there's more illustration than text doesn't make it any less of a book.
Another one is that it's not art; again, it is. It takes time and patience to master, and amazing works can be created!
The MOST common misconception is that it is PORN!
IT IS NOT ALL PORN.
Yes, there is a pornographic genre, but the likely hood of finding it on the high street is slim. However, on the off-chance that there is a Manga on the shelf with x-rated material in it, it's usually wrapped in plastic and rated M. The only exception to this is Yu-Gi-Oh which holds promotional cards inside.
If you are worried about the content of a Manga, please check the back - usually by the bar code - for a rating. T and OT+ are the usual teenage ratings starting from 13.
